I have moms permission to post. I am at a loss on this one and would love
some help.
I had a mom contact me with a 4 week old. She told me she was in pain on
her left breast localized in one quandrant. She had seen her OB at 1 week pp
with pain but he told her it was normal and to contact an IBCLC if she had any
questions.
When I asked her questions she told me her breast had hurt from week one.
She had stopped nursing on that side and has only been pumping. She had
been taking Ibuprophen everyday for the pain. Some days she had to take
Percocet it hurt so bad. She says she has no fever and it didn't appear red,
but alwyas tender to the touch and too painful to nurse.
One thing she was concerned about was after she pumped she would find
what she described as egg white consistency clumps in her milk.
I told her she needed to go to her OB and discuss the symptoms and talk to
him about getting an ultrasound of the breast.
The ultrasound came back negative and he gave her RX fior Doxycycline for 10
days.
She called me last week and said she felt a little better and would call me
when she finished with her meds.
Today she called me with a very inflamed breast. It is very painful and she
finished her meds a few days ago.
I told her she needed to call her Doctor and she told me he had told her that
he didn't know what it was and to call an IBCLC.
So to all the smart women/men on the list if you could help me with this I
would appreciate it. At first I thought it might be an abscess but it didn't
come out in the ultrasound. She tells me the pain is more localized behind the
areola now? What is with the clumps in the milk?
If you have any advice for me to assist her I would appreciate it.
