Hi Lisa: Found a reference (all pedis--1st three are profs at University of
Colorado School of Med/Denver) re: delay of instilling eye preps after
delivery:

Hathaway, W.E, Groothuis, J.R., Hay, W.W. & Paisley, J.W. (Eds.) (1991).
Current pediatric diagnosis & treatment (10th ed.) (pp. 59). Norwalk, CT:
Appleton & Lange.

From pg. 59: "The first 1 1/2 hours of life are an important time in the
process of mother-infant bonding. The infant is alert and able to follow with
the eyes, a response prompting meaningful interaction with
mother...Prophylactic treatment of the eyes for gonococcal opthalmitis should
ideally be withheld until after the initial bonding has taken place. It can
be performed safely within 1 hour of birth."

Hope that helps. Karen G.
