Hey Everyone,

I' like to clarify a couple things: First - I am very proud to be an IBCLC.
It was a life goal that I reached and have been very successful at. I am
proud to be a member of this community - of ILCA. I am proud to be in a
field where I can make a difference in someone's life. Second - I am
anal-retentive about ethics in both my personal and business life. I am so
ridiculously picky about right and wrong that I even irritate myself at
times because I cannot just 'let it be - go with the flow - not let
something be a big deal'. One might say I can be rather obsessive about it
(I make my partner nuts at times!). That being said I'd like to explain my
personal reasons for stating that I have issues with IBLCE's ethics at this
time.

Ann says the board is very ethical - I believe her - I used to see it.
However, that being said my concerns remain based on what is happening right
now and in the past 6 months: the SoP that made it impossible for many of us
to do our jobs; the new interim director and his ties; the fact that I
personally have received NOTHING by mail (snail or e-mail) informing me of
the many changes happening within IBLCE; the fact that still to this date I
have received NOTHING in writing about the SoP - neither the original
document or the fact that it was rescinded; to this date I have received
nothing re: the new interim director - his qualifications, his job history,
his own personal ethics, what he wants to bring to IBLCE - nothing.

So - how does this strike me as being unethical? I personally find it to be
unethical to keep IBCLC's in the dark about what is happening within IBLCE.
As our certifying board I feel they are obligated to keep us informed of the
happenings and changes that are occurring. Using only the internet as a
source of information (if this in fact what is happening) is inappropriate
(IMNSHO) - cheap sure - we all know mailings are expensive - but I know too
many people do not have this type of access so how are they to get this
information if IBLCE does not mail it to them in hard copy? How many people
get their information from Lactnet? Not everyone, that is for sure. I
personally know many IBCLC's who knew nothing about the SoP until I sent
them information on it - they are not on Lactnet! We should not have to
rely on this type of word of mouth for the important information regarding
our IBCLC status, rules, regulations, changes, SoP, etc. IBLCE should be
making sure that all of this information gets to every single IBCLC when it
comes out. That clearly is not happening.

I know many people share this concern re: the lack of communication. I know
many people share my concerns about the SoP and the new ID. IBLCE is not a
democratic organization. We have no real way of knowing if we are being
heard or not - we have no real response from IBLCE. Very little
communication. If anyone wonders why we are frustrated - well there it is.
We need information from our certifying board - and we are not getting it.

Is the IBCLC certification the gold standard? Yes - but the requirements
are changing and making it near impossible for many to even think about
sitting the exam. Am I taking a huge risk by even considering not
recertifying? You bet - but one person did say it best - IBLCE counts on
our dollars to keep running. They need to make it worth our while to sit
for the first time (make it possible for as many to sit as possible) and to
recertify. They need to improve their communication skills tremendously - I
do remember getting a lot of information about IBLCE stuff years ago.where
is it now? I haven't moved for 9 yrs.did they lose my address?? So why
should I spend my hard earned money to take an exam that I don't really
'need' to do what I do (but I do want it!), and to support an organization
that doesn't support or communicate with me, and puts out SoP's that make it
impossible for me to do my job, etc, etc, etc?

I tell my kids - actions speak louder than words - if you want someone to
know you care and that they truly are important you must communicate with
them and let them know that you hear them and you are interested.IBLCE is
being very quiet from where I sit.

I am not intending to start a fight or major discussion - I do not want to
be flamed by anyone who does not agree with me or thinks I am being radical
- I'm not interested. I am just making a point. I know for myself I need
to hear directly from IBLCE about these circumstances and I have not. That
speaks volumes to me.I am sad, I am frustrated, and I am tired of being
ignored. I speak and my voice is not heard - I feel ignored.this is just my
own personal opinion.

Have a good day all - off to my mommy group to hang out with a bunch of
phenomenal women.

Warmly,

Jaye
