Don't forget that bottle feeding babies do this same behavior. They may
be called difficult, colicky, or angry. OR even "extremely hungry"
because they fuss so much the bottle gets shoved into their mouths to
quiet them down. I have seen babies arch their backs and stiffen up
while lying on their backs on a blanket on the floor. I have seen them
do this when they are lying on their backs on moms legs (kind of like in
her lap). They arch and it looks like they are about to roll off the
blanket or lap -- but it isn't rolling, it is arching and stiffening of
the body. They are often the babies who can hold their heads up from birth.
The old edition of the BAB suggested wearing them in a sling with their
backs rounded. Or trying to breastfeed in the football/clutch position
with the back rounded. I find that the cradle hold works if you stretch
the baby's body around moms rib cage rather than allowing it to be out
and away from mom's body.
