Hello, All: We all run into the frustrated comments from parents on a
daily basis on how everyone is telling them something different. What
we've all lost is the hormonal basis of breastfeeding and of all human
behavior. I like to tell parents that when their babies are skin-to-skin
with them, this position allows the parent and the baby's hormones
to "talk" to each other. Thru this type of "hormone conversation", both
the parent and the baby are able to get what they need from each other -
feeding, comfort, and warmth for the baby and feel-good feelings and
bonding for the parents. I just picked up a copy of Kerstin Uvnas Moberg,
MD, PhD's book, The Oxytocin Factor ($2.17 for hardback, what a deal, on
Amazon.com). I have just begun to look thru it and can already see that it
is a must read. She devotes a chapter to oxytocin and breastfeeding alone.

This is what parents need to hear: "Take all the information that you are
getting from books, internet, videos, classes, and well-meaning friends and
relatives, lay it all out on the mental table in front of yourself, sort
thru it, and put together a parenting package that works for you and your
family. And if Plan A doesn't work, move on to Plan B." In the words of a
dad last week: "That makes the most sense of anything I've heard yet!"
