This baby who can't breathe or nurse well sounds possibly like a baby with a velopharyngeal
insufficiency. This can usually be confirmed by an ENT. I'm not sure what the tool is called
but it's a little tube that goes up the nose and allows the doctor to see the soft palate. I believe it's common
for these babies to be a little less stressed with a bottle because they usually figure out another
way to get the milk such as gumming. Especially with a Haberman. These babies experience
feeding problems very similar to babies with a submucosal cleft. The solution is usually not
surgical but it can be quite challenging to nurse a baby with this issue. I would definitely recommend
pumping to protect moms supply, doing really short and frequent feedings, using a Haberman when
baby is way too stressed for breast, and doing lots of upright positioning which can minimize the sensation
of "burning" when the baby starts to get milk moving up into his nose.
If anyone would like to hear more about my experience nursing my velopharyngeal insufficient
son they can email me privately.
