Jennifer:  I agree about your statement regarding the deleterious effects of
cow milk.  Just because I posted negatively about soy does NOT mean I'm
endorsing cow.  In fact, I and my family do not ingest any milk.  As I
posted earlier, I have NEVER had cow milk (was dx as highly allergic as a
baby and given soy of all things--not breastmilk bec by father thought it
"inappropriate").  Anyway, the whole "Got Milk?" campaign is one of the most
"successful" cases of social marketing.  I teach my students, patients and
family that milk is not necessary beyond natural weaning (3+ years in the
case of my own kids), and in fact, it can have negative health effects.  For
those who question this, there is a growing body of evidence that supports
this (some of the earliest works are from Dr. Frank Oski--a previous
Mothering Magazine "living treasure" I believe).  Those of us who do not
drink milk, but do get our calcium in other ways and engage in active weight
bearing exercises--have exceptionally strong bones as documented by bone
scans.  Sorry to all the dairy farmers out there, but my choice is clear
(water, that is).
