I work in a large hospital that delivers about 6,000 babies/yr. We (LCs)
have been fighting the policy that states ALL newborns in the Transition
nursery are to be given glucose water. Many times these babies have not
been put to breast yet (I am working on that also). Thursday I was told
that at a Pediatric meeting that day the glucose water was discussed and
some of the "powers that be" want it discontinued. HURRAY! That is, HURRAY
until I heard the next sentence: They want to replace it with FORMULA.
FORMULA given to EVERY baby, breastfeeder or no. This has not been
instituted yet of course, but I was told that this is the new
recommendation by the AAP. I can't believe it, and spent over 2 hours
Thursday night on the AAP website. I found nothing. Can someone enlighten
me? I need something in print before I open my mouth.
Thank you.
