Naomi asks: Here's my question: Is there any evidence that breastfeeding
classes have any benefits?

I don't know about initiation or duration rates, but nurses would tell me
they could always tell when a mom had attended my class because they would
approach breastfeeding more relaxed and usually needed less help getting
started. When I would talk with a mom who had been at class, I felt I was
reinforcing previous knowledge rather than starting from scratch. I would
always state early in the class that I didn't expect those attending would
remember everything I covered, but when they came in and had the baby, they
would be hearing the information for a second time and that would be a lot
easier. There is so much information that moms are given in the short time
they are in the hospital after delivery, that if they can be exposed to
information ahead of time, it isn't quite so overwhelming.

Admittedly, this isn't something that can be easily measured, so you really
can't call it evidence based in the purest sense, but it does seem to make a
difference, depending on the quality of the information covered in the
class.
