this business of "checking for residuals" (sounds like putting a technical
name to some form of torture so that it doesn't sound so bad) is done in my
area, and yes, done to breastfed infants, because . . . of course! . . .
they CAN'T be allowed to nurse more than every three hours . . . it makes
them TOO TIRED, don't you know, and USES UP MORE CALORIES than they can take
in, poor little things. much easier to just put that pumped milk in a bottle,
then they "don't have to do that" (meaning suctioning their stomach). of
course, if the milk isn't there, or if the nurse can't be troubled to go find
it, then, well, gosh, ain't it convenient, there is always formula around.

and what do *I* know, not being a NICU nurse? nothing, of course. and it
doesn't "hurt them" to suction their little stomachs, the moms are just
"oversensitive." it couldn't possibly cause oral aversion or difficulties in
the breastfeeding relationship.

yes, paula meier's excellent booklet about nursing preemies is given out in
some hospitals. apparently not read.
