I recently met a new mother whose record showed she had suffered from PCOS
before pregnancy. She got pregnant spontaneously. I had not had time to
read the record before seeing her, which was just for the baby's PKU test.
He weighed 3830 g (about 8 lb 7 oz) at birth and had lost 200 g (7 oz) by
the third day, when she went home. She thought she might have mastitis when
I saw her, but she didn't. The baby was then 5 days old, and weighed in at
3930 g (8 lb 10 oz) and has never had anything but a breast in his mouth.
So in this case, at least, PCOS was not associated with low milk supply.

Rachel Myr, in Norway, where figures released today show that 80% of babies
here are still breastfed at 6 months, though there are some age and social
differences. Among younger women it is under 70%, and among older,
well-educated women it is 90%. Wow! The survey only looked at babies 6
months old so we don't have fresh figures on rates later than that.
