Dear Ann,

If this mom is suffering from cholestasis of pregnancy, then the symptoms should begin to abate soon. Actually, breastfeeding may help as it is thought to be linked to the liver being unable to cope with the high estrogen levels during pregnancy. The itching and jaundice should begin to subside with the birth and be completely resolved within the next few weeks. The biggest risk is to the fetus - it is associated with a higher than usual rate of stillbirth. It is thought to be genetically linked and has a high chance of recurring with subsequent pregnancies.

Warmly,
Sharon Knorr, BSMT, ASCP, IBCLC
