In response to the recent questiona bout whether our discussion of
problems if reflective of our entire work, and in light of the
current discussion on multiples, I'd like to share this experience.
I recently saw twins that are doing better than some of the
singletons. They were born at 36 weeks, so will warrant a little
watching for the first few weeks, but so far both are nursing
beautifully with all the right signs of effective suckling and milk
transfer. The first 24 hours, surprisingly the one with the more
traumatic birth (vacuum bruise on the frontal area) knew what to do
and how to do it right away while the first one, with no other
potential challenges except being "near term" took a while to
realize the free ride was over and he had to work for his food. Mom
was patient and fortunately the nurses didn't push and by the time I
saw them on day 2 he was doing as well as his brother. It helps
that mom has already nursed a singleton for 13 months.
So, nothing earthshaking, but did want to show, in the midst of all
the discussion of challenges with multiples, that there are also
times when it works beautifully.

Winnie
