Dear Lactnet Friends:

If the baby in question had been breastfeeding, no one would know what
color was the mother's milk.

Kay Hoover shared a picture she took of newborn milk that looked like
prune juice and was guiac positive, meaning that there was some blood in it
which can happen with rusty pipe syndrome. It was fine for the baby to
drink. Milk and blood are siblings.

This is another way that our cultural image of milk is the white stuff that
comes out of the carton, and any deviation makes people question what comes
out of a human mamma.

I am sure that cow milks must be different colors when fresh out of the
cow...but pasteurization and homogenization make for a uniform color. Are
there any dairy experts on this list to tell that story?

warmly,
