Jana,

The agent that binds to bilirubin is protein.  The body needs protein 
to be present to sweep the bilirubin out of the body.

It is true that breastfed babies have a higher incidence of *normal* 
jaundice, but this is not harmful to babies.  This higher incidence of 
normal jaundice may be due to the fact that a mother's milk doesn't 
come into big quantities until around the 3rd day postpartum.  Baby's 
bilirubin generally peaks at day 5.
