Dear Lactnet Friends:

Hospital staff make mothers afraid when the baby does not breastfeed
according to schedule. The staff act alarmed and put pressure on the dyad
to make breastfeeding happen now. This could be in the first hour after
birth, or after 5 or 6 hours without feeding. Hospital staff will force a
baby to breastfeed as a result of this system pressure.  It could be the
pediatric provider "this baby has to breastfeed by X hours, or we have to
give formula".  It could be the lactation staff feeling pressured to make
breastfeeding happen; the result is excessive use of nipple shields and/or
forced latch.

These attempts to force the relationship scare mothers; who pick up on
staff urgency. These practices can  ruin breastfeeding at home in the first
week, and is a major reason of referrals to my private practice.

We have a long way to go in feeding babies at their best times, and keeping
babies skin to skin until baby chooses to go to breast.
