Dear All:

Last summer I had a client that had an impossible time releasing milk to the
pump and her baby was not capable of driving the supply. We tried
everything - the SNS & a nipple shield with the SNS to try to get her baby
on the breast and at least getting some release of milk. The breastfeeding
medicine specialist thought her ductal placement was such that it was near
to impossible for her to release with a pump.

So, I saw prototypes at the ILCA conference that were designed for a
different purpose - allowing moms to sit up straight while pumping and being
able to hold the pump bottles straight without leaning forward. These
flanges had ridges on the top part. The actual opening was much larger than
apparent because of the slant.

I was sent a few prototypes to test and I tried one on a mom with pump
trauma from a flange with a diameter that was too small. I swear, I felt
like if I had been able to videotape the mom - it would have made one of
those perfect commercials. She was raving about the difference. She had
larger very elastic breasts with some edema. The kind that are difficult to
shape for a baby that is having difficulty creating a seal on the breast.
She probably won't need to pump much because the baby responded very well to
the nipple shield having her first real feeding probably since birth.

Anyone else attending the ILCA conference received samples and tried out
these flanges? Are there women for whom these don't work?

Best regards, Susan
