mardrey's beautiful story and this continuing thread brings to mind the
experience of a client i saw recently. her baby "would not nurse" immediately
after birth, so the nurses put formula on the mother's nipples to "entice him
to nurse." what further proof is needed that the staff at that hospital
"don't" really believe breastfeeding is normal or best, if they could believe
that the smell of formula on the mother's breast would "convince" him to
nurse?

luckily this was a very smart baby. he refused. unfortunately, he kept
refusing, too, until i convinced him. he was so smart he was willing to be
convinced, too. i like a happy ending.
