Chanita, it is always a huge temptation to defend one's mediocrity. In this
case, this is what your head nurse was doing...she felt the need to defend
the mediocrity of care and of staff knowledge regarding lactation. Your
knowledge is a threat. If only she had congratulated you, and asked you to
assist her in developing staff enrichment? Is there any way that you could
turn this situation around, and offer to help her bring the others up to
"standard."? In what other profession is it ok to know the basics, the
minimum. Would any of us go to a surgeon who was not a specialist, someone
who knew all the "ropes" associated with our condition? I for one wouldn't
...........I would want the one who knew as much as possible, in order to
asssure the best possible outcome. Why is this acceptable regarding bf?
Because it doesn't matter, that's why. I hope that someone else has some
wise words to help you convince your co workers and staff leaders that bf is
important, and that we as professionals need to make it our business and
priority to be as informed as possible.
