Hi all,
I just can't keep out of the fray on this one. BreastFEEDING is not
exactly the same as BottleFEEDING. I think that by using the parallel
word we are reinforcing an equivalence that I, for one, do not want to
reinforce. Immunological benefits aside, we do not encourage mothers to
pump and bottlefeed because it is just not the same. If we had a
different word for bottlefeeding (such as "artificial feeding") that
accentuated the differences perhaps breastfeeding would then seem
normative, but we do not. I do understand the multiple usages of the
word "nursing" in some English speaking countries. I wish that there was
an unequivical alternative.
