A few people have stated that the AAP used to recommend 6 months and then
went to at least one year in 1997. In fact, the previous AAP recommendation
had been *exclusive* breastfeeding for 4-6 months then continued
breastfeeding up to one year. The change was from "up to 1 year" to "at
least 1year." I believe this was a clarifiation of the fact that the AAP
wasn't recommending weaning at one year.

A lot of people apparently believe that the previous AAP recommendation was
for 6 months. IMHO, that was to a large extent influenced by the formula
industry, whose pamphlets often suggested that the AAP recommended only 6
months of breastfeeding. Regards, Alicia Dermer, MD, IBCLC
