My kids' pediatrician is awesome as he does not seem threatened at all by
info from the web or when I challenge him. Recently my son had a sleep
study (he has autism, ADHD, ODD, SID and takes a host of medications). I
took two abstracts I found on PubMed that correlated sleep disorders and
autism to our psychiatrist and said I wanted a sleep study (Andrew has a
life-long history of sleep trouble). She immediately said she would request
it, but because we use military medicine, the Navy ped actually had to order
the study. All I did was ask and it was arranged (took two months to set up
but there was no argument on the part of the ped).

We got the results last week and he has big sleep problems (no surprise
here, but he almost no REM sleep at all). When I met with the ped I took
the notes I gathered from the internet, a pertinent PubMed abstract, my list
of questions, a list of definitions and parameters for normal sleep and an
email I received from a sleep specialist in New England who graciously
answered my questions when I emailed him. The ped readily admitted I had a
better understanding of this then he did, took all my notes and said he
would be calling the neurologist, psychiatrist and probably emailing the
doctor I had corresponded with.

So, all this to say that there *are* docs out there are don't get weirded
out by patients who bring them information. Perhaps it is because this guy
is YOUNG (graduated from med school in 1995). When my husband first met him
he remarked that he had "t-shirts older than that guy." His wife nursed
their twins for at least 8 months, probably longer.

Kathy
