Dear Fellow Lactnetters:

I have searched the archives, and found a couple of posts mentioning blood
blisters, but none of them seem relevant. Your thoughts are most welcome.

My client is currently nursing her 15 month old 2-3 times a day. About 2
weeks ago, she noticed that an area on her nipple was swollen and painful to the
touch, but not particularly painful to nurse on. She doesn't know what caused
it. She speculates that maybe her son bit her while falling asleep at the
breast, but she doesn't remember a specific incident.

She avoided nursing on that side for a day or so, and the swelling and
redness seemed to be diminishing. Now the area doesn't hurt, but has turned purple
like a blood blister, so she asked me to come see it tonight. I saw a purplish
raised blister that is about 1/8" in diameter, located just below the tip if
her nipple. Your thoughts on what is going on here and what should be done
would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Kathy
