I've posted before about my client with family hx of soy allergies and
asthma whose first child developed a severe peanut allergy while bfg. Mom
had been told to eat lots of protein in preg. and postpartum (good advice)
but wasn't much of a meat eater. She ate LOTS of peanut butter and
occassionally gave relief bottles of soy. Baby had a crumb of a peanut
butter cookie at 11 months old and went into shock. The allergist described
peanut allergies as something baby had been sensitized to during bfg. and
said soy was in same family (as is fenugreek) and that family hx of asthma
was a red flag. I don't know if that holds true across the board, but as
peanut allergy is one of the most life-treatening allergies there is. That
makes knowing that this sensitization is possible an impt. thing for us.

Information is power. This doesn't have to be an anti-bfg message. It's
another way we can help protect moms and babies. My client was FURIOUS
(partly at me) for not being warned of this. I told her how terribly sorry
I was, but it was new info to me. I hate making mistakes, but one can only
know what one knows when one knows it. I didn't know that about peanut
allergies. Now I do.

My client and I processed our feelings together. I told her that she was
going to be the impetus for me to take better histories, and to be careful
now to bring up this issue when I counsel. She has become an avid reader on
this issue, feeds me info on the subject, advocates well for her child (who
now is at risk in many ways from the prevalence of peanut and peanut prod.
in so many foods), and has now consulted with me about a second child.
