At the birth of a relative's baby which I attended a couple of years ago
as her doula (and yes, no meds!), the nurses had wrapped the baby in
warmed receiving blankets a couple of times and put him on his mother's
chest, but still weren't satisfied with his temp.  Finally they got wise
and put bare baby on mom's bare chest, then covered both of them with
the warm blanket.  Baby soon warmed up to a satisfactory temp.

To me, one of the most fascinating points made in the book KANGAROO CARE
was the fact that when baby was in contact with mother's bare chest, the
temperature of the skin on the mother's chest would change to help
regulate the baby's temperature.  Even with just a verbal suggestion
that the baby seemed a little cool, the mother's chest temperature would
rise.  Fascinating stuff!  The book discusses kangaroo care of premies,
but I would suspect that this might happen with a full term baby, too.
