Just wanted to let you know what's happened with the vegan mom I described
last week who wasn't making milk (baby had been admitted at 9 days with
dehydration, breasts never "grew" during last two pregnancies etc.) I had
suspected a hormone issue and asked you guys about the possible suppressive
effects of mega soy in maternal diet on milk production. Had the baby's suck
evaluated by specialist, no probs. She finally got to the doctor, blood work
reveals hyperthyroid and seriously low prolactin levels. Interesting combo!
Funny thing about the soy, the doctor thinks if she weren't eating so much
soy, which also suppresses the thyroid, she might have already had a heart
attack. Anyway, she started reglan today, hopefully things will improve soon.
Going to see endocrinologist next week. I want to thank all of you who
posted suggestions here and privately, and provided input and further
questions to ask of this mom. Your assistance is invaluable.
