I also disagree with "5-6 wets are on the edge of dehydration." It may be 
best to use averages as a guideline because there will always be a few babies 
that do fine with this many nicely soaked diapers IN ADDITION to their several 
stools per day. Many babies also wet when they stool so those should count too. 
I recently worked with a six day old who was admitted for some silly thing 
(parents said she was "gagging" with feedings but no one saw it in the 23 hours 
she was in the hospital). Mom said they were worried about baby being 
dehydrated and I asked why? Pointed out clinical signs we look for (sunken fontanel, 
poor skin turgor, dry mucous membranes) in addition to number of wets, etc. My 
guess about gagging is that mom  was having a strong let down now that milk 
supply was settling in and that baby was being "flooded" when in certain 
positions. Luckily ped asked me what I thought, shared these thoughts and baby was 
discharged after I had a liitle talk with mom.
