Poor baby, being accused of playing up! Perhaps her ear on mom's arm
hurts, and this is why she wants to lay on a pillow to feed. We truly
can trust babies that they have reasons for what they ask for with their
behavior.

I had a toddler in my practice who was treated with chemotherapy for
leukemia. She went on a nursing strike because she associated
breastfeeding with the incredible nausea from the chemo. She would not
take breast milk in any form, even ice pops. When the doctor finally
gave her an antiemetic drug with her chemo, she gratefully went back to
breastfeeding. So babies do certainly learn by association, and
sometimes those associations are faulty.
