Hi,

One of the hardest part of the job as an IBCLC I find is dealing with signs of postpartum depression, especially when it is masked as anxiety with breastfeeding and baby. I am wondering if others see this as often as I do. Do you screen your mothers for postpartum depression routinely? I have mothers that come in with pages of feeding records, pumping logs, history of seeing other IBCLCs, having had tongue revised, having been treated for thrush, bought a scale and are weighing daily. These are moms, not in early postpartum, but typically 3-4 months postpartum. I do a lot of listening and try to sort things out, but usually the babies are doing well. I feel that first mom needs treatment before we deal with any breastfeeding issues. What do you experts say?

Thanks,

Mary Westra RN, IBCLC
