Will see the pair in a couple days for another weight check
before a return to the pedi's office. Right now, they are trying to decide to
use formula or not to use formula. They really do not want to. But, if her
iron status means she will always have a low supply, she would not want her
baby
to need more and her not feed the baby.

I've known a number of moms who produced fine when anemic at level you
mention. Doesn't mean it couldn't be a problem for some... However, the mention of a
rough start indicates initially there was ineffective breastfeeding, but
there's no mention as to whether mother used another method to remove milk until
baby was able to do so effectively. An ineffectively breastfeeding baby without
adequate compensatory milk expression could affect production. From your
description, it sounds as if all have "turned the corner." Would be a shame to
implement an unnecessary intervention.

Have pre- and post-BF weights ever been done? May help to look at
pre-/post-feeding-weights re: several BF over a period of a few days. The skeptical pedi
may also feel better if such "quantitative" outcome data was available...
