Dear Lactnets:
Again, I am requesting your expertise and wisdom. I have been trying to
keep track of when I see this sucking pattern. It seems to follow more
C/s births having Demerol PCA's for pain control. I can't remember if it
was with epidurals and stadol or the epidurals that ended up C/S. This
is a baby that starts sucking before he is actually latched. It's like
slurping up from the nipple to the areola. I've tried a couple of
things that seem to help a little but would really appreciate your
advice if there are other ways to help. I try tapping a finger on the
bottom lip to get them to open wider, pull the chin down to get the
tongue to drop down and then try to latch. These are real barracuda
babies and their poor moms cannot always stay with them or they have
very raw sore nipples. I's even tried finger suck training and walk my
finger back out to get them to relax a little. Your suggestions as
always are very much welcome and appreciated.
Fondly, yours in lactation,
Terri Klein, RN, CLE,CLC
