Thank you, Anne, Jennifer, and Jennifer. It sounds to me like this mom has
an inflammatory rather than infectious process going on as her fever is low
grade. I was only able to get as far as recommending a Babymoon and
suggesting the Ped or I assess for possible tongue tie. She took Augmentin
prescribed by her OB for the first bout and refilled the med without
consulting the OB for the second bout. Coincidentally, her Ped and I were
discussing homeopathy just a few days earlier. As the IBCLC, I would want
to rule out tongue tie, assess a feeding, fine tune the position/latch, and
assess her breasts and nipples before developing a plan of care. I wonder
about the appropriateness of the Ped prescribing for the mother as she is
not her patient, the baby is. Is this common practice? I know homeopathic
remedies are OTC, but what about the liability for the Ped of treating the
mom?
