Molly, one reason the research is from the 1990's rather than now, is that
the jury is back, the verdict is in, and there isn't really any ethical
reason to continue to do research on the effects of supplementing without
solid medical indication any more.
The WHO document 'The Evidence for the Ten Steps to Successful
Breastfeeding' has references for the specific negative effects of
supplementary feeds in hospital. I recommend starting there, and seeing
whether you really need anything beyond that. You can get this publication
as a .pdf in English, Spanish, or French (or all three) at
http://www.who.int/nutrition/publications/infantfeeding/en/index.html and
the English version is
http://www.who.int/nutrition/publications/evidence_ten_step_eng.pdf

Whose ward stopped giving boiled water left and right for "unsettledness
after breastfeeding" in the space of about one week, during which the
evidence for the 'no supplement without indication' step was the theme at
report at noon every day in both labor and postpartum wards, in
Kristiansand, Norway
