To Linda

You asked for suggestions about the two week old baby who had a poor latch
and had been refusing the breast. I've had quite a bit of luck with these
suggestions:

* Lots and lots of skin to skin contact in-between feeding times
* putting mom and baby into a bath together
* feeding before baby gets frantic with hunger,
* using P-syringes at breast and with finger feeding, no bottles at all,
* having mom pump with a hospital grade double pump to keep her supply up and
give the baby her milk via syringe or cup
* no pacifiers, make sure she knows how to finger feed and also how to have
baby suck on a finger correctly.
* Giving her lots of encouragement and reinforcing that these methods have
been used by many moms and can really work is crucial!
I always spend extra time and make more phone calls with these moms. Of
course, working with good latch-on is important- assuming the baby will go to
the breast at all - or when they do.....
Are they being treated for the thrush? It may help when baby's mouth feels
better!
Best of luck. Let us know what worked!!!
Yours, Janaki
