I am a mom of two, 5 1/2 and almost 3, and I do not recall my babies getting
dirty enough to require a full bath for at least a couple of months, just a
swipe under the neck (you'd be surprised how gross baby spit-up smells after
it's been under the neck a couple of days and had a chance to congeal!) and
a squirt bottle of water on the vagina (I have two girls) and tush. My
pediatrician let me know he felt strongly that a baby needs to be bathed
nightly from the beginning, but I think that was part of his belief that
babies should get on a sleep schedule as soon as possible, with that being a
part of the necessary "routine". (Schedule? What's that?)

The only reason I can think of to bathe a newborn is to wake a baby too
sleppy to nurse. Then again, a baby may become so hysterical from it that
s/he shuts down and refuses to nurse.
