I remember reading that too.  I also remember reading somewhere, sometime
that babies *did* grow -- up to 1/2 inch -- during the "growth spurt"
episodes.  But I explain it to parents as babies have "refrigerator" days --
just like the rest of us do.  Can't stay out of the refrigerator or the
cupboard.  Hungry all day -- looking for something to eat.  Wake up hungry
and keep at it.  Cookies, cheese, a candy bar (for those of us NOT on the
Atkins' way of eating!!) -- whatever.  Fortunately for our waistlines (as
adults), we don't have refrigerator days all the time.  But toddlers have
them frequently and so do teenage boys.  And babies do too.  So go with the
flow, and recognize it for what it is.  And I've quit trying to tell mothers
just *when* those days will occur.  They will happen when they happen.....and
moms seem to understand and accept that as something to which they can relate.
