There has been an interesting thread on the use of various nipple creams/ointments: whether their use is evidence-based; whether an IBCLC needs a study first before recommending a course of care; whether one should be recommending a product from a company whose marketing practices are questionable.

So let's go back to the mythical doe-eyed mom.

What are you recommending to the mom who presents with *no* nipple injury (or maybe only redness/no skin trauma) -- or she talks about "craving" something to put on her nipples? I sometimes get this question in the pre-natal BF class: I sympathize with those moms; I had very itchy nipples while pregnant.

I usually suggest that mom rub around the drops of colostrum or breastmilk that remain on the nipples after a feeding. But I will also admit: I have recommended the use of some of the aforementioned (ooh! big legal word!) nipple creams, telling moms it is a "can't hurt might help" option.

Remember now -- I am not talking about *injured* nipples, and I am not talking about recommending a cream to *fix* an injury. I asking about what you'd reocmmend to the mother who wants to put something on her nipples, for whatever reason. What is OK, given the fact this is Baby's dinner plate?
