Dear Wise Ones,
I love my scale and find my pre and post weights help families. I am
shocked how a good looking feeder won't transfer and the opposite. I
always explain to the mother this is just a slice of information that
will be added to everything else we have gathered. We look at overall
weight gain, diaper output, behavior as well which are more important.
I do always ask the mother, "Is this the best feed your baby has had,
somewhere in the middle, or the worse?" BEFORE we do the post weight so
she is not colored by the number on the scale. This helps me gauge how
accurate this feed might be in reflecting overall transfer.
If she says it was the best feed ever and the baby transfers 1 oz in 30
minutes at 2 weeks, we know there is an issue.
I also down play the transfer number if it is not great. If it is less
than .5 oz I say "About .5 oz." and then we work on creating a good plan
for getting her back on track.
Sometimes the lack of transfer is a shock to parents but they need this
knowledge to get things back on track. They did come to us because
something was off.
Good communication is, as usual key.
Thank you,
