My daughter is in the HANDS Program in Anderson County, Kentucky, and this
week a flyer from them arrived in the mail. There was an article on Early
Childhood Caries that stated "If your water does not contain fluoride or you
are beastfeeding only, your child is a high risk for caries." It also stated
"sources of fluoride include drinking water, foods and formula prepared with
water."   It pretty much said that formula feeding is better for your
child's teeth than breastfeeding! 

I was outraged!  My granddaughter is exclusively breastfed and at eight
months of age would not know what to do with a bottle if you gave her one.
She also has had only one "sick visit" at the pediatrician that turned out
to be a viral illness that required no treatment. My daughter has been told
she is the only breastfeeding mother in the HANDS program in our county. 

I am an RNC and CLC at Frankfort Regional Medical Center, and will be
receiving results from IBCLE next week, so I feel compelled to address this
comment that I suspect has been distributed to HANDS participants all over
the state. The research I've found has been contradictory to this article. 

I printed some information I was able to find online and plan to give it to
the HANDS Program Coordinator. Any other suggestions?
