"IMO, it is the only way to change the horrible interventions occurring in

our healthcare system. You can speak to your mentor about how to get hold

of your medical records, as well as your baby's. Read if your baby was fed

in the nursery and who did it."

Royce replied:

Oh, Lee, I so totally agree with you about pulling the records and

considering litigation, however, I KNOW that babies in the newborn nursery

(can't even believe they still have one) where I used to work were given ABM

and it was NOT charted.

"Not on the chart, not done."

I have seen nurses pull the curtain so no one can see in the nursery and say

"I'm going to finger feed now," then promptly put a bottle in the baby's
mouth!

What you permit, you promote

Lee speaking now:

Royce - How widespread is this? As a WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator, I
worked in a hospital (i.e. Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle) for a
little over 3 years. At first, I was shocked to see that some RNs did not
chart the feeding of Artificial Baby Milk (ABM) to breastfeeding newborns.
Although I was not happy with the RNs who did that, the number was extremely
low (I realize that even one is one too many); however, I did not think that
I could do anything to stop such unethical (illegal?) behavior. My way of
countering that was to teach pregnant women to never let their babies out of
their sight.not even for one minute. The pediatricians would have to check
their babies in their rooms, not in the nurseries. There was a
neonatologist who used to say: "The best nursery is an empty
nursery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" God bless her!

However, it is more likely that a mom CAN find out if her baby received ABM
without her permission, and she CAN report the RN or sue everyone
responsible in the hospital, right up to the president of the hospital.
That might, I hope, make the few RNs who would feed ABM to a breastfeeding
baby think twice. In any case, it is better than doing nothing. Now that I
am more empowered as a woman and LC, I would report any RN who did something
she was not supposed to do, and risked harming a baby or its mother.

I no longer promote misbehavior because I no longer permit it.

Warm regards,

Lee
