I'm not sure if this is the article you are referring to but if not, it may be of
interest anyway. Susan Henly and myself (and additional colleagues)
were authors on an article which appeared in Birth, June 1995 which
addressed this problem. The data were obtained from a sample of 630
first time mothers who initiated breast-feeding. The anemia was
documented based on postpartum hemoglobin values. We used a value
of <10g/dL as our criteria.

Anemic mothers who were identified by this study as having "insufficient
milk syndrome" had a higher level of symptomatology than did
non-anemic mothers. The mothers with insufficient milk syndrome
reported a shorter period of full breast-feeding (3.8 weeks vs. 10.5
weeks) and earlier weaning (12.1 weeks vs. 30.7 weeks) compared
with mothers who did not have insufficient milk syndrome.

This was a small part of a much larger study. The investigators were
interested in this problem based on clinical observations made in which
mothers who were anemic postpartum seemed to have a difficult time
obtaining/maintaining an adequate milk supply. The results support these
observations.

If anyone would like more information or has any questions, please post
to the list or e-mail me privately.

Thanks,
