My 13 month old, who doesn't say much of anything yet, says "uma" when he
wants to nurse (usually followed by panting).  As my children call me "eema"
(Hebrew for mother) I think it comes from there. Alot of the other "mamas are
probably for mothers called mommy (any anthropological thoughts on this...)
