Very interesting. It's been said often here that weight is ONE
factor to look at. How is baby doing developmentally? Certainly it
is important to be on the lookout for other signs and potential
problems when the weight gain is significantly below the average
(note that is AVERAGE, not NORM-big difference), but some babies
seem to gain slowly even when everything else is just fine.
I had a colleague (OB RN) several years ago that finally had a baby
after many attempts. Baby was a premie and mom was one of the most
determined I've ever seen. Baby was a slow gainer and even I was
concerned. Whe did find one ped. who looked beyond the weight and
said "Don't worry". I was worried, however when at 6 months he
looked more like a 3 month old and didn't seem to be developing "on
track". Of course, we did need to look at his post "should have
been" age and not just post delivery age. Whe moved away and I
didn't see her for about 3 years. When I did, I expected to see a
child with multiple problems. Was I pleasantly surprised! He was
an active, inquisitive toddler, What belw my mind was how he would
read. He wasn't just reciting the words by memory. He would stop,
comment on the pictures or relate it to something in the room, then
pick up where he left off! The one factor that I think may have
been influencing his early progress isn't a good thing however. His
mom has Marfan's syndrome (which was a big factor in her pregnancy
complications) and he gives the appearance of being a Marfan's child
himself.

Anyway - look beyond just the weight in addition to being sure he is
getting the nutrition he needs.

Winnie
