I had a mom whom I met with "sore nipples". She had the worst nipples I have
ever seen before or since: swollen, bruised, raw. We got her through this
as she was really committed and her baby gained 1 pound a week at the breast.
When the baby was about 2 and 1/2 months old, she took the baby to the ER
with "breathing problems." Her pediatrician admitted the baby and told her
the infant was too fat and this was causing the problem. When she came to
our support group, she was very upset and of course we reassured her she did
not need to cut the baby down in feedings. (The pediatrician had also warned
that the baby would never walk if she kept up this weight gain.) She wanted
me to see the baby's breathing distress. When I looked, there was a happy
healthy baby making noises and then breaking out in a smile. She had simply
found delight in making baby noises while breathing in and was not having
"inspiratory stridor." Mom relaxed and changed Pediatricians. By the way,
this "fat" baby walked at 10 months!!! So I guess we can add stridor as
being caused by breastfeeding.
