Have you been to the WABA site and looked at the Action Brochure? The
English version is at:

http://www.elogica.com.br/waba/wbw97/foldereng99.htm

One of the suggestions comes from Chile where they have developed the
concept of the Breastfeeding Friendly Nursery or child care unit. They
have listed Ten Steps which parallel the BFHI Ten Steps. I pasted them
in at the end of this message for those who don't have web access.

Because of the type of work that I have been doing this past year, I am
extremely interested in this suggestion for the World Breastfeeding Week
activities. I've decided to put together two different one hour
workshops for child care workers. One will be focused on policy issues
and is intended for the day care directors. The second will be for the
individual teacher re how s/he can support mom's efforts to continue
breastfeeding.

I would really be interested in comments regarding content for any of
the following ten steps. Do any of you know of Breastfeeding Friendly
day care facilities? Does anyone have access to policies that might be
suggested for the directors? Does anyone know of any leaflets or
booklets that would be good to use as handouts for these workshops?

Hoping to hear from many of you,
Melinda Hoskins, MS, RN LC2B (July here I come)

10 Steps for a Breastfeeding Friendly Nursery developed
by the National Board of Nursery Schools (JUNJI) in Chile

1.Integrate the topic of breastfeeding in the annual workplan of
the nursery or day-care center at every level.

2. Train all center staff so that they are able to carry out
     breastfeeding promotion and support activities.

3. Inform all families of the children enrolled about the benefits of
     breastfeeding.

4. Emphasize educational activities with pregnant women, nursing
mothers and the family members of children who may be
     interested in the topic.

5. Stimulate participatory learning experiences with the children,
     related to breastfeeding.

6. Support the continuation of breastfeeding in the Nursery or
     Child Care Center.

7. Promote the maintenance of exclusive breastfeeding until the
baby is about six months old.

8. Avoid the use of pacifiers (dummies, teats).

9. Promote the formation of Breastfeeding Support Groups
within the educational community (parents, teachers,
     administrators, caregivers, etc.)

10. Coordinate with health centers and other community organizations on
     joint activities
                     related tobreastfeeding/infant nutrition.
