Pam, My vote would be to directly talk to the midwife.  If I were the midwife
and the story was not true (a good possibility), I would want to know about
the rumor and how it's being spread.  If I were the midwife and the story was
true, I might not like to know that I was doing something wrong but I
certainly feel that anyone in the health care professions "should" be willing
to stand being corrected. (given the evidence/references)  I don't think it
ever unprofessional to address these kind of issues directly.  I'd want to
know, if I were doing something detrimental to my clients.

I am not sure what you mean about other cultures piercing nipples.  It seems
to me that the current teenage culture is to pierce alot of different body
parts including nipples.  When I was a teenager, many adults thought piercing
