From Dee Kassing who can't get onto Lactnet:

Sheila Humphrey's book Nursing Mother's Herbal says GSE itself is non-toxic but that many formulations have contaminents.

Tierana Low Dog's book Women's Health in Complementary & Intergrative Medicine: A Clinical Guide (2005) warns against it in a very long paragraph on p 127. Benzethonium chloride, triclosan, and methylparaben often contaminate the formulations (five out of six studied . . . and the sixth one had no antimicrobial activity!). Dr Low Dog concludes the paragraph with "Practioners should avoid recommending this extract for the treatment of oral thrush in the infant or nipple thrush in the mother."

Hope this helps,
Debbi Heffern for Dee Kassing
