"Do people really believe that having their baby in a
hospital guarantees it won't die??"

Yes, Mary, unfortunately they do indeed believe that, at least here in the Midwest (of the USA). That is why doctors are sued for malpractice most any time a baby dies, and one of the reasons that malpractice rates are skyrocketing and we are losing so many obstetricians.
It is sad, but in a way, can you really blame the parents for this attitude? The hospitals themselves have spent years telling mothers-to-be how unsafe home births are, and that babies *need* to be born in hospital. It is just a small leap from that to the interpretation that therefore hospitals are safe and mom and baby will be just fine as long as the birth occurs in a hospital.
New parents frequently twist what they hear. As a new mom 25 years ago, I kept hearing that babies cry because they can't talk and tell us what they want/need. So, I figured that once children could talk, they didn't need to cry anymore. Boy was I confused and amazed when my talking 2-yr-old still had tantrums!
