Carmen highlights some important points. With the kind of births that most
of our babies experience, and the separations and heel sticks etc, it's a
wonder we don't see more problems. The expectations of so many parents is
that the baby will simply latch like a little limpet and that will be that.
We live in an instant gratification society. We expect a quick fix. If we
could bottle a "tincture of time", we would all be very wealthy!
In classes it's important to highlight that babies are going through major
adaptations ex utero and breastfeeding may take a day or two to get going.
If baby doesn't "get it" on day one or two it does not mean the end of
breastfeeding - this could lead to sharing info re expression, the value of
colostrum etc.
