I have been thinking about alfalfa a lot lately, and am writing this partly
in response to the mom who is concerned about jaundice and wants to bring
her milk in as quickly as possible to avoid concerns w/ baby #4. I have
had several friends give birth lately, and to each I give a bottle of
alfalfa tablets. I feel this is a wonderful supplement for any post-partum
mom (aside from those with clotting disorders or grass allergies) - it
serves so many purposes - in addition to being a galactogogue, it supplies
vitamin K, an essential clotting factor that is also passed to the baby in
the breastmilk when their own VitK supplies are not yet developed. The
clotting factors may help the mom w/ postpartum bleeding, and last but
hardly least, it is a wonderful and gentle natural laxative. My
recommendation is 2 tabs 2x/day (less than the 3tabs 3x/day recommended on
the bottle, which I find a little TOO laxative...)

Does anyone have any reason that this is not a good idea? I don't think
the dose I recommend is enough to cause oversupply, though if oversupply
becomes an issue, it can easily be discontinued. Opinions?

Thanks,
Kirsten Berggren, PhD and aspiring IBCLC
